EFPF is a federated smart factory ecosystem and a digital platform that interlink different stakeholders of the digital manufacturing domain. The EFPF platform offers unified access to a vast number of interoperable tools and services that include among others digital solutions for factory connectivity, distributed workflow design & execution, distributed production planning, shop-floor monitoring & alerting, digital twins, risk management and data analytics. The platform is based on common interoperability standards and security protocols, which allow seamless interactions and data exchange between multiple tools and service while preserving security and privacy concerns. The platform enables users to utilize innovative functionalities, experiment with disruptive approaches and develop custom solutions to maximize connectivity, interoperability and efficiency across the supply chains.
The second review for the EFPF consortium was a complete success, despite the limitations and requirements that a global pandemic brings with it. The project convinced in the evaluation with good progress and good cooperation. Now in the final stage, we continue with the blockchain pilots and start opening the platform for open-call experiments between September 2020 and August 2021. As the COVID-19 pandemic requires to avoid meeting and more or less all of EFPF partners are in lock-down situation, the EFPF project has completely switched to using digital technologies to stay in touch with partners and make progress in these difficult times.
CNet is currently managing the efforts in supply chain blockchain applications for the EFPF pilot use cases.
The consortium of 30 partners, consisting of 3 large industrial partners, 6 Research organizations, 1 industrial association in the aerospace network, 6 SME end-users from different areas of manufacturing and 14 SMEs technology providers met from the 4th to 7th February 2020 at CNet in Stockholm. The technical meeting addressed the integration of practical requirements of the pilot use cases and the application of standards.
These 30 partners have spread across 10 different European States namely: UK, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, Romania, Portugal, Turkey, Greece, Germany and Austria, covering thus the diverse end-user and market needs in the field of digital manufacturing. This provides a well-balanced combination of complementary skills and expertise in the European Factory Platform project.
Peter Rosengren presented our blockchain based solution for supply chain management and collaborative manufacturing at the IoT & Data Science 2018 conference in Vienna. The conference addressed the optimisation of automated business with data. As IoT and Big Data are currently connecting to the “Industrial Internet”, which uses sensors, applications and technologies to collect and analyse data from all possible sources, analysis results can be used to improve business processes, reduce costs, and unlock new revenue streams. In cooperation with our partners Atos and In-Jet we organised a workshop focused on the theme: “In the Wake of IoT – Digitalization of Everything from Supply Chain Management to Outdoor Rock Concerts”.
We have been elected as a member of the OPC Foundation. OPC is the interoperability standard for secure and reliable exchange of data in the industrial automation space and in other industries. It is platform independent and ensures the seamless flow of information among devices from multiple vendors. The OPC Foundation is responsible for the development and maintenance of this standard.
The OPC standard is a series of specifications developed by industry vendors, end-users and software developers. These specifications define the interface between Clients and Servers, as well as Servers and Servers, including access to real-time data, monitoring of alarms and events, access to historical data and other applications. With the introduction of service-oriented architectures in manufacturing systems came new challenges in security and data modeling. The OPC Foundation developed the OPC UA (Unified Architecture) specifications to address these needs and at the same time provided a feature-rich technology open-platform architecture that was future-proof, scalable and extensible.
Today the acronym OPC stands for Open Platform Communications.
Blockchain technology enables IoT developers to create a new range of innovative applications that allows a set of independent actors to share data and execute business transactions in a trusted environment without having to use proprietary networks and centralised trusted third parties. The Blockchain represent a distributed ledger of transactions that all parties can share and trust. Potential applications range from financial transactions, food traceability to distributed electronic patient records, In the COMPOSITION project we are researching, developing and evaluating blockchain solutions for supply chain management and trusted product traceability to support factories of the future. Blockchains are also used to establish a trusted agent-based market place for automated tendering and negotiation supporting trading.
